She was David May Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities and director of the program in film and media studies at Washington University in St. Louis.
Studlar earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in music from the University of Southern California before completing her PhD there in 1984. Afterward, she taught for three years at the University of North Texas and for eight years at Emory University. In 1995, she joined the University of Michigan as professor of women’s studies and director of the program in film and video studies, and in 2000 she was named Rudolph Arnheim Collegiate Professor of Film Studies there.
