Sir Garfield Sobers, the Barbadian cricketer who became one of the defining all-rounders in world cricket, died on July 17, 2026, at the age of 89.

Born in Bridgetown on July 28, 1936, he represented the West Indies from 1954 to 1974 and earned lasting distinction for his rare combination of attacking batting, varied bowling and sharp fielding. Sobers made his first-class debut for Barbados at 16 and his Test debut the following year, later establishing a record with 365 not out against Pakistan in 1958.

Over a long career, he played 93 Tests and scored more than 8,000 runs, while also taking 235 wickets. In first-class cricket, he scored over 28,000 runs and took more than 1,000 wickets, and he also spent time with Nottinghamshire and South Australia.
