Born in Griekwastad on February 5, 1948, he played provincial rugby for Free State after studying at the University of the Free State. Jansen was part of the Free State side that won the Currie Cup in 1976, and he made his Springbok Test debut against New Zealand at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria in 1970, appearing in all four matches of that series.

He also earned notice for a decisive tackle on All Black flyhalf Wayne Cottrell in his first Test, a moment that helped shift the match in South Africa’s favour.
