Otálvora, the Venezuelan journalist, writer and historian, died on July 21, 2026. Born Edgar Omar Contreras Otálvora on September 6, 1959, in Tovar, he built a career as a columnist, analyst and public intellectual with interests in international politics and economics.
He held government and diplomatic posts and became known for commentary on Latin American affairs, especially military, diplomatic and political issues. Otálvora wrote for newspapers in Venezuela and the United States, including Diario Las Américas in Miami, and directed El Nuevo País in Caracas from 2006 to 2010. He also taught at the Central University of Venezuela and was a close collaborator of former Venezuelan president Ramón J. Velásquez. His work included biographical studies of Raimundo Andueza Palacio, Juan Pablo Rojas Paul and Virgilio Barco Vargas.
