Born in Greenwich, London, on October 12, 1922, she trained at the Cone School of Dancing before Peggy van Praagh recommended her to Antony Tudor’s London Ballet. Tudor cast her in a dance for four women in Covent Garden’s Aida, her only collaboration with him.
Clayden later created roles in works by Ninette de Valois, Robert Helpmann, Frederick Ashton, John Cranko and Andrée Howard, and also danced many parts first made famous by Margot Fonteyn. She married Major H. J. Gamble in 1948.
