Dan Davis, an American radio broadcaster known as “The Duke,” died October 21, 2026, aged 84.
He spent nearly 30 years in radio, beginning in 1963 at WEMJ in Laconia, New Hampshire. In 1981, he joined Enterprise Radio, the nation’s first all-sports satellite radio network, where he delivered sports updates before the service went off the air after nine and a half months.
Curt Chaplin, later known for announcing “The People’s Court,” gave Davis the nickname “The Duke” during that stint. Davis joined ESPN Radio in January 1992 as one of its original broadcasters, working from the network’s base in Bristol, Connecticut. He anchored the midday portion of “ESPN Radio SportsCenter,” and his voice introduced various ESPN programs. From January 1998 to March 2004, he also appeared on “The Tony Kornheiser Show.” Kornheiser often interrupted Davis’s sports reports with comments; Davis was initially taken aback, but the two later developed an easy rapport, and Davis began adding humorous remarks to his updates. His work at ESPN and Enterprise placed him in the early years of national sports radio, while his broadcasts combined news updates with an increasingly playful on-air exchange with Kornheiser.
