She became a prominent figure in Boca Raton, Florida, after moving there in 1965 to work at Florida Atlantic University. In the early 1970s, Wilken was a leading advocate for annexing University Park into Boca Raton, a merger approved in a 1971 referendum.

She later served as Boca Raton’s first female mayor and as a Palm Beach County commissioner. Born in Pennsylvania, she attended Emma Willard School, George Washington University’s Columbian College and earned a master’s degree in public administration from Florida Atlantic University.
