A former international rugby union hooker, he was born in Hastings, Victoria, and educated at Sydney’s St Patrick’s College. McDeed played for Parramatta in the early 1950s before moving to Manly, and later earned selection for Australia in 1961.

Called up as cover for Peter Johnson in a home series against Fiji, he retained his place for the tour of South Africa, where he played in the draw with South-West Africa and the win over Border.
