Born in New York City, he earned his Ph.D. in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953.
He taught at Stevens Institute of Technology through 1960, held a Ford Foundation Fellowship at CERN from 1959 to 1960, and was professor of physics at Yeshiva University from 1964 to 1976. Finkelstein later became an emeritus professor of physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was on the faculty from 1976 until his retirement. He died in Atlanta.
