Born in New York City on July 19, 1929, he earned his Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953.
He taught at Stevens Institute of Technology through 1960, held a Ford Foundation Fellowship at CERN from 1959 to 1960, and later served on the faculty of Yeshiva University from 1964 to 1976 before joining Georgia Tech. Finkelstein was known for work on the Eddington–Finkelstein coordinates, and in 1958 he identified Schwarzschild’s solution of the Einstein field equations as describing a region from which nothing escapes.
