Born in Athens in 1944, he graduated from the National Theatre Drama School in 1973. He worked in theatre, television series and theatre for television, and appeared in more than sixty films from 1979 to 2026.
Valavanidis also published three poetic collections. He was married to actress Aspasia Kralli, with whom he created the Apo Mihanis Theatre, and they had one daughter, Katerina.
