Tsutomu Shibayama, a Japanese anime director of film and television, died on March 6, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born in Asakusa, Taitō, Tokyo, on March 9, 1941, he was active from the 1960s and worked on a wide variety of television anime series. He joined Toei Doga in 1963, and his colleague that year was Hayao Miyazaki.

Shibayama made his debut as an animator on the animated film Doggie March and later worked on the TV anime Wolf Boy Ken, where he studied under Seiichi Hayashi.

Tsutomu Shibayama (芝山努, Shibayama Tsutomu; 9 March 1941 – 6 March 2026) was a Japanese anime director of film and television. He was born in Asakusa, Taitō, Tokyo.
