Born in Madrid on January 13, 1927, he was the son of José Ortiz-Echagüe and grew up in a family noted for its artistic sensibility. He studied at the Colegio Alemán de Madrid, where he completed his baccalaureate in 1945, and entered the Madrid School of Architecture in 1947.
In June 1952, he received the annual prize of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando for his final degree project. He later worked as an architect and served as a Catholic priest, and was associated professionally with the University of Navarre.
