John Dixon Hunt, an English landscape historian, died September 27, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Gloucester, he attended Bristol Grammar School and King’s College, and began his academic career teaching English literature. His university work included the University of Michigan and Leiden University before he joined the University of Pennsylvania as a professor in 1994.
At Pennsylvania, he chaired the department of landscape architecture and regional planning until June 2000 and later held emeritus status. Hunt’s scholarship examined gardens and landscape history, with particular attention to France and England from the early 17th century through the end of the 18th. His books included The Pre-Raphaelite Imagination: 1848–1900 and a critical commentary on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, both published in 1968, as well as Garden and Grove: The Italian Renaissance Garden in the English Imagination: 1600–1750 and Greater Perfections. He also wrote studies of figures including Andrew Marvell, John Ruskin and William Kent. His articles appeared in landscape journals and publications such as Apollo, Lincoln Center Theater Review and Comparative Criticism; his chapters addressed subjects ranging from T. S. Eliot and modern painting to gardens as utopia and commemoration. Hunt received the Rome Prize.
