Carmelo Scoma, the Italian politician and trade unionist who served as mayor of Palermo, died on July 24, 2026.
Born in Prizzi on February 22, 1931, he began his career at the ERAS, the Sicilian Agrarian Reform Agency, before joining the Christian Democracy party in 1953 and the CISL trade union. He became active in Palermo politics, entering the city council in 1970 and later serving as deputy mayor under Giacomo Marchello.
Elected again in 1975 with more than 16,000 votes, he led Palermo as mayor from 1976 to 1978. He was also associated with the left wing of the Christian Democrats, Forze Nuove, alongside Rosario Nicoletti.
