
Carlos Westendorp, the Spanish diplomat and politician who served as minister of foreign affairs and later as high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, died on March 30, 2026, in Madrid, Spain, at the age of 89.
Born in Madrid on January 7, 1937, he joined the Spanish Diplomatic Service in 1966. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1996, then as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1997 to 1999, where he was charged with upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement.
He was also a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2003.
Carlos Westendorp y Cabeza (7 January 1937 – 30 March 2026) was a Spanish diplomat and politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1996.
