Bruno Bischofberger dead at age 86, Swiss art dealer

Bruno Bischofberger, the Swiss art dealer and collector who became one of the most influential figures in postwar art, died on May 9, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born in Zürich on January 1, 1940, he studied art history, archaeology and ethnography at the University of Zurich, with further study in Bonn and Munich. In 1963, he opened his first gallery in Zürich, City-Galerie, and two years later staged his first Pop Art exhibition there, showing work by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Claes Oldenburg and Jasper Johns.

He later became known for presenting American Pop Art alongside Minimalism, Land Art and Conceptual art, building a career that left a lasting imprint on the Zurich art world.

Bruno Franz Bischofberger (1 January 1940 – 9 May 2026) was a Swiss art dealer and collector.
