Born in New York City on February 8, 1938, she became known as an author and teacher of integrative medicine and served as a professor at the Osher Center of Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. With Michael Lerner, she helped found the Commonweal Cancer Help Program, and she later established the Institute for the Study of Health & Illness.
