Born Violet Brumley in Mount Ida, Arkansas, she made and played the fiddle and later became known nationally for her craft. She married Adren Hensley in 1935 and had nine or ten children; after that, she stopped making fiddles for several decades.

The couple moved to Yellville, Arkansas, in 1968, where she lived thereafter. Her work drew wider attention in 1970 when National Geographic featured her, and she also appeared on television programs including The Beverly Hillbillies, The Art Linkletter Show, Captain Kangaroo, The Bob Braun Show, Live with Regis and Kathy Lee, and CBS Evening News.
