Bill Armstrong, an Australian music producer and Member of the Order of Australia, died on August 7, 2026, aged 97.

Born in 1929, he grew up in Melbourne and began by recording his friends’ bands onto wire before taking work capturing court proceedings and civil ceremonies. His early assignments included recording Robert Menzies’ opening of Geelong’s Shell Refinery, and he later taped live jazz performances such as the 1949 Australian Jazz Convention, making acetate copies for performers to buy.

In December 1949, he founded Bill Armstrong Sound, and in the early 1950s he issued local jazz records on his own labels, including Paramount, Magnasound and Danceland. He also worked in ABC Radio broadcasting and oversaw the public address system at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.
