Bassek Ba Kobhio, a Cameroonian writer and filmmaker, died on May 12, 2026, at age 69.
Born in Nindjé, French Cameroon, in 1957, he worked as a film director, producer, writer and diplomat. He was known for The Great White Man of Lambaréné and Le silence de la forêt.
Kobhio also founded the Ecrans Noirs film festival in Yaounde and directed the Higher Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Professionals of Central Africa in the city. His career spanned from the 1980s to 2026.
