Ali Asghar Mir Hijazi, an Iranian cleric and politician who served as deputy chief of staff to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei until 2026, died on March 7, 2026.
He previously held the post of deputy for foreign affairs in Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence. Hijazi was also involved in coordinating high-level affairs among Iran’s branches of government, intelligence agencies and the implementation of state policies on behalf of the Supreme Leader.
He was regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Office of the Supreme Leader of Iran and was sanctioned by the European Union in 2012 and by the U.S. Treasury in 2020.
