Born André Émile Cerdini on December 18, 1929, in Vals-les-Bains, France, he studied law at the Catholic University of Lyon and began his career in the French judiciary after serving in Ivory Coast and later in Normandy, Puy, and Lyon. He became chief magistrate of the Cour d’assises of Rhône at the Palais de justice historique de Lyon in 1984.
