Ana Hatherly, a Portuguese writer and artist, died on August 5, 2015, at age 86.
Born in Porto on May 8, 1929, she built a career that spanned writing, visual art, poetry, essay writing, filmmaking and painting, and she was regarded as one of the pioneers of experimental poetry and experimental literature in Portugal. Hatherly studied Germanic philology at the University of Lisbon and later earned a doctorate in Hispanic studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
She taught at NOVA University Lisbon, where she also helped found the university’s Institute of Portuguese Studies. Her first poetry collection, Um Ritmo Perdido, appeared in 1958, and her later work included books such as Um Calculador de Improbabilidades, O Pavão Negro, Itinerários and Fibrilações.
