Ana Hatherly, the Portuguese writer and artist who helped pioneer experimental poetry and experimental literature in Portugal, died on August 5, 2015, aged 86.
Born in Porto on May 8, 1929, she built a career that spanned poetry, visual art, essays, film and painting, and her work also reflected training in philology and the humanities. Hatherly studied at the University of Lisbon and the University of California, Berkeley, and later taught at NOVA University Lisbon, where she was part of academic life as well as the literary and artistic avant-garde.
Her debut poetry collection, Um Ritmo Perdido, appeared in 1958, and she went on to publish books that broadened her reputation in Portugal and beyond.
