Ali Larijani, Iranian politician and twice secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, died on March 17, 2026, in Tehran, Iran, at the age of 67 after being assassinated.

He served as speaker of the Parliament from 2008 to 2020 and as minister of culture from 1992 to 1994. Larijani also held the post of secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2025 until his death.

Ali Ardashir Larijani (3 June 1958 – 17 March 2026) was an Iranian politician, military officer, and philosopher who served as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2025 until his assassination in 2026. He had previously served in the position from 2005 to 2007. From late December 2025 until his assassination, he was widely considered to be the de facto leader of Iran.
