
Anthony Mason, the Australian jurist who served as chief justice of Australia from 1987 to 1995, died on March 17, 2026.
He was born in Sydney on April 21, 1925. Mason served as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1969 to 1972 and was appointed to the High Court in 1972, serving until 1987.
He later served as a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong from 1997 to 2015.
Sir Anthony Frank Mason (21 April 1925 – 17 March 2026) was an Australian judge who served as the ninth Chief Justice of Australia, in office from 1987 to 1995. He was first appointed to the High Court in 1972, having previously served on the Supreme Court of New South Wales. He had also served as a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong from 1997 to 2015.
