He was 82. Born Alan Edward Closter on June 15, 1943, in Creighton, he played college baseball at Iowa State University and represented the United States at the 1964 Summer Olympics, when baseball was a demonstration sport.

Closter signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent before the 1965 season and went on to appear in 21 major league games over parts of four seasons between 1966 and 1973.
