Solomon Pappaiah, the Indian scholar and actor known for his work in Tamil television and film, died on September 11, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Madurai on February 22, 1936, he was widely identified with the debate format known as patti mandrams, which he moderated for decades and through which he brought social themes and literary discussion to large audiences. A professor at The American College from 1961 to 1994, he was also recognized for his long service to Tamil literature, his down-to-earth speaking style and his appearances in films including Duet, Boys and Sivaji: The Boss.
He received the Padma Shri in literature and education in 2021.
