Sir Peter Newsam, the British educationist and former chief education officer who later directed the Institute of Education at the University of London, died on December 5, 2023, aged 95.
Also known as Sir Peter Anthony Newsam, he was born on November 2, 1928, and was educated at the Dragon School, Clifton College and The Queen’s College, Oxford, where he read philosophy, politics and economics. After teaching, including a period back at the Dragon School from 1956 to 1958, he served as chief education officer for the Inner London Education Authority from 1975 to 1981 and later chaired the Commission for Racial Equality from 1981 to 1985.
He then became secretary to the Association of County Councils and, from 1989 to 1994, led the Institute of Education, where he helped oversee an extension that now houses the Newsam Library.
