Born K. Velayudhan Nair on April 22, 1935, in Thiruvananthapuram, then in the Kingdom of Travancore, he adopted the name Crossbelt Mani after the success of his second film, Cross Belt, in 1970.

Over a career that ran from 1968 to 1990, he directed more than 40 Malayalam films and served as cinematographer on 10 others. His credits also included Naradhan Keralathil, Vazhve Mayam and Eettappuli, and filmmaker Joshiy once worked as his assistant director.
