Zuca Sardan, the literary name of Carlos Felipe Alves Saldanha, died on August 6, 2026, aged 92, in Hamburg, Germany, of complications from a fall.
A Brazilian poet, writer, draughtsman and diplomat, he was one of the figures associated with Brazil’s marginal poetry movement of the 1970s. Born in Rio de Janeiro on August 18, 1933, the son of artist Firmino Saldanha, he first pursued painting before turning to poetry after seeing Jean Cocteau’s “Orpheus,” later describing himself as a “famous unknown surrealist poet.” In the 1950s, he circulated small-run mimeographed pamphlets of his verse and later used photocopying as part of his work.
He graduated in architecture from the University of Brazil in 1956 and trained for diplomatic service at the Rio Branco Institute before serving in Algeria, the Dominican Republic, the United States, the Soviet Union, the Netherlands and Germany, where he settled in Hamburg.
