Xuong Nguyen-Huu, an American biochemist and pioneer of protein crystallography technology, died on May 11, 2026, at age 92.
Born in Vietnam in 1933, he focused his research on methods for determining protein structures and biological macromolecules, including protein crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. He received degrees in electrical engineering, mathematics and physics from institutions in France and the University of California, Berkeley.
Nguyen-Huu was a professor emeritus of physics, biology, chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego, where he had been on the faculty since 1964. He also invented the X-ray multiwire area detector known as Xuong’s X-Ray Machine in 1975.
