Xhelil Gjoni, an Albanian politician and journalist, died on February 14, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born on November 3, 1938, in Maqellarë, Dibër, Albania, he was a member of the Albanian Workers’ Party (PPSh). He studied philosophy in Moscow and Leningrad during 1956 to 1961, and after returning to Albania in 1961, worked for the Zëri i Popullit newspaper for 17 years.
Gjoni also served as a representative in the National Assembly during the 12th legislature from 1991 to 1992 and was on the governing board of the Socialist Party of Albania.
