He was best known for playing Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter, Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad, Cain in RoboCop 2, The Ripper in Last Action Hero, Kelso in Heat, Sammy Barnathan in Synecdoche, New York, Mr. Ulman in The House of the Devil, Reverend Nathaniel in Hell on Wheels, and the Pallid Man in 12 Monkeys.

He also voiced everyone but Michael and Lisa in Anomalisa. His debut feature as a filmmaker, What Happened Was…, won the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
