Wei-Wen Yu, a Chinese-born American civil engineer and academic known for his work on cold-formed steel structures, died on June 2, 2026.

He was 102. Yu was born in Weifang, Shandong, China, and built a career that included teaching civil engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology from 1968 into the 2000s.

He later became a Curators’ Distinguished Professor emeritus there and was the founding director of the Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures. After earning a civil engineering degree from National Taiwan University in 1950, he went on to receive a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1955 and a PhD in structural engineering from Cornell University in 1960. Among his books was the textbook Cold-Formed Steel Design.
