He was a multi-time U.S. National Squash Champion and national paddleball champion, and he was inducted into both the U.S. Squash Hall of Fame and the College Squash Hall of Fame. He studied at Harvard University, the University of Chicago and Brooklyn Law School, and later taught at the University of California, Berkeley. He was the father of writer and filmmaker Galt Niederhoffer.
