Born in Oakland, California, on June 17, 1943, he was a competition swimmer for Yale University, where he won five NCAA titles. Clark qualified for the U.S.

Olympic team in 1960 while still in high school and went on to win Olympic gold medals at the 1964 Games. He also set a world record and captured six individual and five AAU relay championships while swimming for the Santa Clara Swim Club.
