Born in Nagoya on April 1, 1931, he was known for his work on Indian philosophy and Adi Shankara, and for teaching at the University of Tokyo and the University of Pennsylvania. Mayeda wrote books including “Indian Philosophy and Literature” and “A Thousand Teacings,” and in 2014 he received India’s Padma Shri for services to literature and education.
He was also awarded Japan’s Third Order of Merit with the Middle Cordon of the Rising Sun in 2002.
