
Richard Mauer, an American investigative journalist, died on February 23, 2026.
Born Richard David Mauer on May 29, 1949, in The Bronx, New York, he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and later attended the University of Colorado Boulder. He worked for the Idaho Statesman, The Miami News and The Daily Sentinel before moving to Alaska in 1983, where he joined the Anchorage Daily News.
In 1984, he interviewed businessman Bill Allen and reported that VECO Corporation funneled money to support Alaskan Republican candidates who backed big oil.
