Birte Christoffersen Danish-Swedish diver dead at age 101

Birte Christoffersen, the DanishSwedish diver who won an Olympic bronze medal, died on February 23, 2026, at the age of 101.

Born in Copenhagen in 1924, she competed for Denmark in the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform at the 1948 Summer Olympics, winning bronze in the platform, and later represented Sweden at the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics. She also won European championship bronze medals in both events in 1950, after moving to Sweden in 1953, and added silver medals in both in 1954.

Christoffersen, later known as Hanson and then Ekberg, turned 100 in March 2024.

Birte Christoffersen (later Hanson, then Ekberg; 28 March 1924 – 23 February 2026) was a Danish-Swedish diver. She competed in the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform for Denmark at the 1948 Summer Olympics and for Sweden at the 1956 & 1960 Summer Olympics. She won a bronze medal in the platform in 1948 and finished in 8–12th place on other occasions. From December 2025 until her death, she was the oldest known living Olympic medalist.
