René Cárdenas Nicaraguan sportswriter and announcer dead at age 96

René Cárdenas, a Nicaraguan sportswriter for La Prensa and announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, died on May 10, 2026, in Houston, Texas.

Born in Managua, Nicaragua, on February 6, 1930, he was a sports journalist and announcer who joined the Dodgers in 1958 as the first Spanish-language announcer to cover Major League Baseball. He also broadcast games for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers and announced boxing matches.

While working for the Astros, Cárdenas developed the first international radio network, which carried games to Central and South America.
