Born in Sierre on June 20, 1931, he was a member of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) and became a familiar figure in Valais politics over two decades of public service. He sat in the Grand Council of Valais from 1969 to 1977 and later represented the canton in the National Council from 1975 to 1987.
De Chastonay, the son of politician Joseph de Chastonay, studied law at the University of Geneva and also attended the Centre européen universitaire de Nancy. He married Maria Pia Valenti in 1961 and had one daughter, Francesca, and he also chaired the Pro Rawyl association.
