Peter Lai, a Hong Kong lyricist and actor, died on August 5, 2026, aged 76, of complications from a stroke.
Born in British Hong Kong and also known as Peter Lai Pei-tak, he was part of the pioneer generation of Cantopop lyricists. In the 1970s and 1980s, he co-wrote early Cantopop songs with Sam Hui and later wrote for Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung and Alan Tam.
Lai also worked as a screenwriter and film producer for Golden Harvest and TVB, and from the 1980s onward he appeared in movies and television series.
