Pat Hyland, an Australian jockey and horse trainer, died on March 9, 2026.
Born in Port Fairy in 1941, he rode from 1956 to 1990 and recorded 2,382 winners, including 30 at Group 1 level. He is best known for riding What A Nuisance to victory in the 1985 Melbourne Cup and for winning the Caulfield Cup on Affinity, the Golden Slipper on Vain and the W.
S. Cox Plate on Star Affair. After retiring from riding, he became a trainer and won more than 500 races. His son, Chris Hyland, is also a horse trainer.
