Nirmal Purja, the Nepali mountaineer known as Nims or Nimsdai, died on July 30, 2026, aged 43, after an avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
Born on July 25, 1983, in Myagdi District, Nepal, Purja became widely known for his record-setting ascent of all 14 eight-thousanders in six months and six days in 2019, using bottled oxygen. Before turning to high-altitude climbing, he served in the British Army with the Brigade of Gurkhas and later in the Special Boat Service.
He was also the author of Beyond Possible and was recognized as a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
