
Nabyl Lahlou, a Moroccan filmmaker and playwright, died on May 7, 2026.
He was 81. Born in 1945 in Fes, Morocco, Lahlou was also a theater director, author and actor.
He studied theater in Paris at the Académie du Théâtre de la Rue Blanche and L’Ecole Charles Dullin, and later taught at Kordj-el-Kifane in Algeria. He directed his first play, Al-Sa”aa, in Morocco in 1965, later wrote plays in French and Arabic, and was regarded as one of the most influential Moroccan theater directors of the 1980s.
