More about Mike Beigel

Born: January 29, 1947.

Michael Lee “Mike” Beigel, an American electronics engineer, died September 15, 2026, aged 79.

Born in Manhattan, New York, on January 29, 1947, he was the son of Jerome Beigel, an advertising agent, and Freida Marks, a bookkeeper. His family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was young.

Beigel attended Miami Beach Senior High School, graduating in 1964, and then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There he earned bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and humanities engineering, combining technical study with a degree in humanities engineering. In 1972, he founded Mu-Tron, an electronic musical-effects manufacturer in New Jersey, and developed a series of products for the company. They included the Mu-Tron III envelope filter, the Bi-Phase, the Phasor, the Flanger, the Vol-Wah Pedal and the Octave Divider. The Mu-Tron III was used by Stevie Wonder on his hit single “Higher Ground,” bringing one of Beigel’s designs into a widely known recording. His work at Mu-Tron thus encompassed both establishing a musical-effects company and creating the devices associated with its name. In 2025, the Recording Academy awarded Beigel a certificate of recognition for his achievements.
