Martin Gutzeit, a German clergyman and politician who served as commissioner of the Stasi Records Agency, died on September 15, 2026, aged 74.
Born in Cottbus in 1952, he was among the founders of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR in 1989. Gutzeit sat in the freely elected Volkskammer from March to October 1990 and then in the Bundestag until December that year.
From 1993 to 2017, he served as Berlin’s state commissioner for the Stasi records.
