Born in 1949 and known for writing and performing in both Breton and French, he set his own texts to music and also drew on the work of René-Guy Cadou, Léo Ferré and Pierre-Jakez Hélias. Originally from Le Juch, near Douarnenez, he studied medicine in Brest after attending lycée in Quimper.
He began on guitar as a solo performer and later with a rock group in 1976, while traditional instruments such as the bombarde and bagpipe had shaped his childhood. His work often returned to the sea, its islands and its mariners, subjects that ran through his songs and themed albums.
