Kai Krüger, the Norwegian jurist and academic who was a professor of law at the University of Bergen, died on August 12, 2026, aged 86.

Born in Copenhagen on May 4, 1940, he moved to Norway at the age of six and later studied law at the University of Oslo, graduating as cand.jur. in 1966.

He earned a dr.juris degree in 1979 with a dissertation on deviations in maritime transport, and was appointed professor of law at the University of Bergen the same year. Krüger’s principal work, Norsk kontraktsrett, was completed in 1989 and brought him the Meltzer Prize in 1990, along with recognition for his wider scholarly work. He became a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 1994.
