Born Darina Gažová in Tvrdošín on November 23, 1931, she built a career that spanned more than four decades at Czechoslovak Radio and its Slovak successor, where she worked on the folk music desk from 1961 for about 33 years. She travelled across Slovakia with a tape recorder to collect songs and instrumental performances in their home villages, while also performing the material herself.
Laščiaková became one of the best-known voices in Slovak folk music and was recognized with honors including the Cross of Pribina, Class I, and the Pavel Tonkovič Award.
